Bookkeeper & Payroll Administrator

About the Role
We are seeking an accurate, detail-oriented, and experienced Bookkeeper & Payroll Administrator to join our team on a full-time, in-office basis in Burnley. In this dual-function position, you will play a critical role in managing day-to-day financial record-keeping and ensuring accurate, compliant payroll operations for a diverse portfolio of clients.
This role is ideal for a dedicated finance professional with strong numerical aptitude, up-to-date knowledge of UK payroll legislation, and hands-on experience in bookkeeping practices.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Accounting Support
• Maintain accurate sales, purchase, and general ledgers for client accounts.
• Perform regular bank reconciliations, tracking income and expenditures.
• Prepare and submit timely VAT returns under Making Tax Digital (MTD) rules.
• Reconcile supplier statements, manage accounts payable/receivable, and monitor credit control.
• Assist in preparing monthly management accounts and trial balances up to year-end standard.
Payroll Administration
• End-to-end processing of weekly, fortnightly, and monthly payrolls for client businesses.
• Calculate gross pay, tax (PAYE), National Insurance contributions, student loans, statutory payments (SMP, SSP, SPP), and net pay.
• Manage workplace pension schemes, workplace auto-enrolment assessments, and pension provider submissions.
• Issue digital payslips, P45s, P60s, and submit Real Time Information (RTI) FPS/EPS filings to HMRC.
• Handle payroll queries from clients and communicate efficiently with HMRC when necessary.
Required Skills & Experience
• Experience: Proven hands-on experience in a dual bookkeeping and payroll role within an accountancy practice or commercial environment.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in modern accounting and payroll software (e.g., VT Transaction+, Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, or BrightPay).
• Compliance Knowledge: Practical working understanding of UK PAYE, Statutory Payments, Auto-Enrolment, and MTD VAT regulations.
• Qualifications: Relevant professional certifications (e.g., AAT, ICB, IAB, CIPP) are a plus, but Qualified by Experience (QBE) candidates with strong practical skills are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Working Pattern: Ability to work full-time hours on-site at our Burnley office.
• Attributes: High level of accuracy, confidentiality, strong organizational capabilities, and excellent communication skills.
